  • Explain and justify the events behind the first shots fired in the Civil War at Ft. Sumter.
  • Discuss the reasons for the North and South leader’s shortsightedness about the war.
  • Identify the terms Ft. Sumter, Anaconda Plan, Iron Clad, Antietam and Shiloh.
  • Explain Lincoln’s motives for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and the documents’ effects.
  • Examine a primary resource and interpret the complex message behind a seemingly straightforward event.
  • Identify the significance of the 54th Regiment and Robert Shaw and analyze its to explain whether there was “Glory” in their actions.
  • Explain the effects of the Civil War on the Southern Region of U.S.

  • Identify political parties and their platform’s during the 1850’s with a focus on the Whigs, Democrats, Republicans, Know-Nothings and Free Soilers.
  • Compare and contrast the party platforms of the emerging parties during the 1850’s.
  • Identify and explain the historical significance of the Dred Scott case, the Lincoln-Douglas debates and the Freeport Doctrine.
  • Evaluate the opinions of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas on the issue of slavery, popular sovereignty, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision.
